Humphrey Bogart: The Signature Collection, Volume II
Cover: 'Humphrey Bogart: The Signature Collection, Volume II' DVD box-set

In 1999 for their "100 Years . . . 100 Stars", the American Film Institute named Humphrey Bogart the number one American screen legend among 50 male movie stars, past and present.

On-screen, the actor has been a favorite throughout the world since the 1940s. Off-screen, Bogie was one of Peter Lorre's closest friends, his drinking buddy and partner-in-practical-jokes.

Warner Home Video has restored (from the original camera negatives) and digitally remastered five Bogart films, three of which co-starred Lorre.

Date:   October 3, 2006
Retail:   $59.98

  • The Maltese Falcon (1941) -- The film noir classic pitting San Francisco detective Sam Spade (Bogart) against a band of international criminals (Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Elisha Cook Jr) in search of a jewel-covered statuette. The first pairing of Bogart and Lorre -- and of Lorre and Greenstreet, who went on to make eight more films at Warner Bros.

This special 3-disc set, which can be ordered separately (see below), includes commentary by Bogart biographer Eric Lax, original trailers, new documentary The Maltese Falcon: One Magnificent Bird (with Stephen Youngkin, among others), original radio adaptations (audio only), and from the Warner vaults: a cartoon, newsreel, short subject, and Warners' two earlier films of Hammett's work: The Maltese Falcon (1931, Ricardo Cortez, Bebe Daniels) and Satan Met a Lady (1936, Warren William, Bette Davis).

  • All Through the Night (1942) -- A professional gambler (Bogart) sets out to solve the murder of his favorite baker and ends up foiling the plans of Nazi spies (Conrad Veidt, Lorre, Judith Anderson) operating in New York City.

Plus: Commentary by director Vincent Sherman and Bogart biographer Eric Lax, original trailer, new documentary Call the Usual Suspects: The Craft of the Character Actor (with Stephen Youngkin, among others), and from the Warner vaults: Gentleman Jim trailer, newsreel, short subject So You Want to Give Up Smoking, and cartoon Lights Fantastic.

  • Passage to Marseille (1944) -- During World War II, a group of convicts (Bogart, Lorre, Philip Dorn, Helmut Dantine, George Tobias) escape from the French penal colony at Cayenne in order to join the Free French resistance.

Plus: Orignal trailer, new documentary The Free French: Unsung Victors, and from the Warner vaults: Uncertain Glory trailer, newsreel, short subject I Won't Play, musical short Jammin' the Blues, cartoon The Weakly Reporter, and a 1944 blooper reel Breakdowns.

  • Across the Pacific (1942) -- American counter-spy Rick LeLand (Bogart) versus Japanese saboteurs (led by Sydney Greenstreet) at the Panama Canal.

Plus: Original trailer, new documentary Hollywood Helps the Cause, and from the Warner vaults: Captains of the Clouds trailer, newsreel, short subject Men of the Sky, cartoon The Draft Horse, and blooper reel Breakdowns of 1942.

  • Action in the North Atlantic (1943) -- A Merchant Marine captain (Raymond Massey), his first officer (Bogart) and crew match wits with a wolf-pack of German U-boats during World War II.
